JOB DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking a senior-level materials scientist with substantial experience in silica fiber preform fabrication, and particular experience in specialty silica fibers. You will be in charge of the operation of a newly established, state-of-the-art, MCVD preform fabrication facility, and work from the outset in the commissioning of the apparatus, and subsequently in the design and implementation of processes to produce state-of-the-art passive and active fibers. Your work will involve a collaboration with scientists and engineers who will provide the desired end-fiber designs, for which you will develop the appropriate MCVD preform fabrication process.  Besides the operation of the MCVD system, you will work with a preform analyzer to evaluate the preforms, and with other staff in charge of the fiber drawing process and fiber evaluation to ensure that the produced fibers meet end-user requirements. Initially you will operate the MCVD machine directly, performing machine setup, recipe execution, and preform collapse.  But, as processes become further developed, you would train other staff to operate the equipment. Your work is expected, in the long run, to yield fibers that go well beyond present technology in terms of application performance, and provide the Nation with a unique capability to advance silica-fiber technology.

-- Must possess strong oral and written communications skills, and must be able to present findings/results to internal and external organizations.

Skills: Preferred

-- PhD in Ceramics, Chemistry or Materials Science with experience in silica-fiber preform technology or an MS with commensurate experience.
